Shackled by restraints of reality, Frida finds herself unable to paint. In a moment of desperation, she re-discovers her life source—the other Frida. Calle Allende is inspired by an entry in Frida Kahlo’s diary about “The Two Fridas”. Calle Allende, a puppet theater production, brings to life Frida’s struggle to reconcile her broken self and dying inspiration. Frida’s pain has clouded her, but in a moment of clarity she soon realizes that without her imagination she will lose her lifeline.
Recommended for ages 14+ due to adult themes of pain and death.

Provocative parody of everyday experiences of street performers in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the characters they encounter, as they strive to strike a record deal and make it big. Will they eat free Hotdogs for life? Will Detective Bark bust the case wide open and earn the title “Good Boy?” Tune in and find out! Bio: Nocturnal Creatures Troupe is a collaboration between artists Krystal Burns (Sweet Oddity) and Omer Gal (Cookie Tongue) spinning absurd tales of three nocturnal misfits, in the format of a puppet musical. Gal and Burns are established artist/performers/musicians and puppeteers, having performed at many festivals, venues and shown work in galleries, namely New Orleans Puppet Festival, Asheville Fringe Arts, and many more. They both love story telling through songwriting, puppetry and pulling imagination in from the otherside. AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR is a vibrant portrait of Peter Schumann, the visionary founder of the Bread & Puppet Theater, whose six decades of radical political performance have been forged from a single, searing childhood question: how do we as humans respond to the madness of war and violence?
Born in Nazi Germany and shaped by the brutal reality of war via the aerial bombardments he experienced as a child, Schumann channeled this trauma into one of the most boundary-breaking landmark theater companies in the world.
Bread & Puppet is an iconic theater group that has helped redefine political theater and public art in the U.S. for over 60 years. Founded in New York City in the early 1960s, the troupe helped to revolutionize street protests against the Vietnam War by utilizing gigantic paper maché puppet performances in public - making them one of the defining art groups of the 1960s.
The Bread & Puppet Theater grew into its full form on a 250-acre Vermont farm in the 1970s, where the landscape itself became a stage that continues to draw thousands to its epic, large-scale spectacles.
Decades later, as international norms collapse and atrocities unfold in Gaza in plain sight, Peter Schumann — now 92 and still working with fierce urgency — finds his life's central question more pressing than ever. Peter continues his relentless work using paintings and epic scale performances to show audiences the true cost of war.
Drawing on originally shot footage and a remarkable archive of spanning more than 40 years, film director Robbie Leppzer offers an intimate window into the man, his art, and his unbroken faith that creativity can stand against the brutality of power.
In an age desperate for hopeful figures of cultural resistance, AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR is a testament to the radical, enduring idea that art is not a retreat from the world — it is a way of fighting for it.

A few notes about the day:
Join in the fun painting settings and characters for a legacy toy theatre show of Aladdin during Legacy Toy Theatre Making. We will have stations set up for you to help watercolor the tiny sets and characters for an eighteen-inch-wide vintage theater with the goal of presenting an informal performance of the show later in the day. No prior experience is needed. Just come to the festival anytime between 3:30 and 6:00 to participate.
You can also catch a Lambe Lambe performance from 4:30 till the main show begins. “What is Lambe Lambe?” You ask. Lambe Lambe is a tiny peephole theater, even smaller than toy theatre, with an audience of one. Our favorite Lambe Lambe performers, Cecilia Cackley and Kara Turner, will be set up in the garden!
At 6:30pm there will be live Toy Theatre Performances on the main stage by a variety of performers! There are six live performances from Baltimore, Maryland and Vermont. Artists include String Theory, Kevin Sherry, Mutual Obsession Circus, WonderWoods Puppets, Kinetic Critters, and Chuck Nesci. They will be projected as well, so all can see the tiny details!
Live performances will be followed by Videos of Toy Theatre and Lambe Lambe performances from across the country and around the world!

STONE SOUP is the theme for this year’s Black Cherry Puppet Theater Community Puppet
Parade, part of the annual SoWeBo Arts and Music Festival on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The
parade celebrates the magic in the story of Stone Soup, in which a hungry traveler convinces a
group of villagers to contribute one ingredient to his pot. Each person’s unique and small
contributions add up to make a delicious and nourishing meal for all. Let’s make Puppet Soup
together! We invite you to bring your gifts to build this parade together and cook up an artistic
feast for our community. This year’s parade marks the 46th anniversary of Black Cherry Puppet
Theater providing arts programming and connecting generations of people with the magic of
puppetry. Huzzah!
Black Cherry will be hosting a series of puppet builds, or work sessions, staffed by volunteer
community artists, to make elements for the parade. All work sessions are free and will take place

SGC will offer a behind-the-scenes demo of a wide variety of flat mechanics used in their award-winning show, UNRAVELING, including: links, pivots, returns, levers and more! Participants will then create their own version of SGC’s signature opening eyes, and have the opportunity to test and refine their work on the overhead projectors. Although this workshop is geared towards participants with at least a basic understanding of overhead projector shadow puppetry, all are welcome to join! “PHANTASMAGORIA” is a marionette variety show featuring a rotating cast of
characters all designed, built, and brought to life to an original score by Puppet
Pants. Specializing in marionette making and manipulation, Puppet Pants
delivers a wordless performance that has intrigued and delighted audiences of
all ages and backgrounds across the United States.
The puppeteer performs in full view, but fades into the background as clowns,
monsters, and mysteries amuse and interact with the audience.
“PHANTASMAGORIA” is filled with whimsical acts ranging from endearing to
odd, but always made for all backgrounds and ages to enjoy. Somewhat
circusy, a little edgy but tongue in cheek, and ending with a call to action to
believe in yourself and follow your dreams.
Shadow Girls Cult:
Henson Grant-awarded duo Shadow Girls Cult presents their newest series of shadow
vignettes, "UNRAVELING." Using a mind-bending blend of light techniques, old-school
overhead projectors, shadow masks and hundreds of intricate and layered shadow
puppets, SGC creates short animated films (live!) for audiences around the U.S.
Infused with elements of sci-fi, film noir, classic horror, and surrealism, "UNRAVELING"
explores the inexplicable moments in time when we, or the world around us, seem to
come apart.

Reliquary is a trio based out of Baltimore, MD featuring husband and wife, Michael Bowen and Aubrey Calderon, and longtime friend, Dylan Kendall. Formed in 2024, their sound draws from folk and psych influences. They released their self titled debut EP in January of 2026.

Nick Cameron and the Heard Mentality, featuring Maximilian Jacobs (violin) and Noah Steele (upright bass), is led by vocalist, mandolinist, and composer, Nick Cameron.
The ensemble brings new material to the canon of contemporary acoustic music, combining Cameron's contemplative and didactic songwriting with the group's virtuosic improvisation.
Cameron has performed at the White House, the Strathmore Mansion, and the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage (upcoming). The trio will debut several new compositions at this performance, among them a piece commissioned by Black Cherry Puppet Theater

One of Europe's most celebrated puppet theaters with their 100-year tradition, the tour highlights the enduring tradition of Czech puppetry, an art form internationally recognized as a part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The characters, Spejbl and Hurvinek, were originally created by Josef Skupa in the late 1920’s. This father and son duo were first performed as social satire, and then until his arrest by the occupying Germans in 1944 as underground theater.
He opened The Spejbl and Hurvinek Theatre in 1945. Later it turned primarily to family-oriented performances after conflicts with the Communist government.
